80s Tees
As you get older, it is hard to resist nostalgia for your past. Things like classic bands and retro video games that might have seemed simply outdated a few years before suddenly become a link to the past. As your childhood gets further and further away, somehow the cultural trappings seem to be more vital day by day.
Recently, I found some of my old 80s tees in storage in the back of one of my closets. I was cleaning out my wardrobe and hoping to make room for some new clothes when I came across a box of childhood treasures. There was the Super Mario Bros tee shirt that I had practically lived in when I was in high school, and the Dexy's Midnight Runner shirt that my older sister had bought me when I couldn't go along to the concert.
Unfortunately, a lot of my 80s tees were pretty well worn. When I was a kid, I would find a shirt that I liked and basically wear it to death. As a result, very few of the 80's tees were even legible anymore. The writing was faded and the logos were nearly invisible. Fortunately, I could still fit in to most of them, and they were pretty comfortable, but they did not seem to have the same effect when you couldn't see what they said.
I started looking everywhere for new 80s tees. Unfortunately, a lot of the originals were collectors items. Finding an original Duran Duran concert t shirt from back in the day is almost impossible unless you don't mind wearing something pretty threadbare. The good news is that a lot of folks are cashing in on all the nostalgia nowadays. They print out pre-aged 80s tees with similar designs to the originals. The prices are cheaper, however, and the conditions are much better.
There are some pretty good t shirt shops in my neighborhood, but I have found that the Internet is the best place to buy 80s tees. You just can not beat eBay for selection and variety, to say nothing of price. Of course, if you are a stickler for authenticity, you might want to try a more mainstream clothing company. For me, however, the issue isn't whether or not it is authentic, but whether it takes me back.
Sometimes, I even like the new designs better than the original 80s tee shirts. I saw a great commemorative Mario Brothers shirt that had screens from all the different games. None of the shirts that they made at the time did that. Even so, nothing beats the thrill of finding a great original 80s retro tee in good shape. It's like recapturing a piece of your childhood.
