How To Build A Great Study Room

Having the proper study habits is an important part of learning throughout high school and on into college. These study habits should start out when children are young so that they stick with the child through the years. Knowing how and when to study are both important, but even more important is that the child has a great place to study that offers little to no distraction or interruption. If you have the space, you should find a way to build a study room so your children have the perfect study area they need to succeed and excel in school.

A great study room starts with an out of the way area that does not get a lot of traffic during the evenings. This can be hard to find in some homes, but you should do the best you can. You can try to section off an area in a quieter room if you don’t find much you can work with. This space should have adequate lighting, but you don’t want to have a desk facing an open window. That proves to be too much of a distraction in a study room for some children. Having a window is okay, but rely on artificial light sources to fully light the desk area.

Provide a comfortable chair and a good desk for the study room, and have a bookcase with reference materials, if you have any. Though the Internet is great for research, the child should not be doing anything else online. This means that you may have to monitor the time they spend in the study room if you can. Don’t allow them to have a phone in the area, or make sure they know not to answer it while studying. Make the study area or room a game and cell phone free zone. There is plenty of time for that after they are done with their homework.

Lastly, make sure this space is used only for study, and that everyone in the home respects that the study room area as a quiet area. There should be no noise, and very little traffic in order for a student to concentrate, especially those that already have concentration problems. You may even want to add something like a beanbag chair or some large pillows for a relaxing place to read. All written assignments should be done at a desk in the room for study, of course, but those softer surfaces are great for relaxing when reading.
