Decorating A Small Bathroom Requires Finesse

image

Bathrooms are usually never as large as we'd like, but some bathrooms redefine small! Maybe it's a powder room bathroom or maybe it's your one and only bathroom. In either case, decorating a small bathroom requires special decorating techniques to make the most of the small space. Here are a few ideas to help you make that bathroom look and feel as large as possible.

No matter how small the bathroom is, you'll want to hang the largest mirror the room will accomodate. If you want a framed mirror, go for a delicate, thin frame. Don't eat up wall space with a large ornate frame. In a long, thin bathroom, place the mirror on the longest wall.

If you're short on shelf space, install a long, sturdy shelf below your mirror, just wide enough to hold toiletries and such.

When decorating a small bathroom, think 'delicate' and 'miniature' as your guiding principles. This goes for window treatments, shower curtains and decorative objects. Levelors and wooden louvres set flush in the sill take nothing away from your square footage. If you choose curtains, use a delicate fabric in a light color or delicate pattern and gauzy enough to let in light while protecting your privacy.

Large, splashy patterns just don't cut it when you're decorating a small bathroom. Big designs tend to be overwhelming in small spaces. Dark colors will also shrink your illusion of space. Your best bets are lighter colors or pastel tones.

To bring some life to this tiny space, use color judiciously. For example, jewel tones of glass suncatchers or colored apothecary bottles can add a lot of cheer and spirit. Bathrooms are often not well exposed to sunlight, but shade-loving plants can nicely dress up a small bathroom. For example, a grouping of African violets can brighten things up. The popular spider plant is an airy and delicate plant that adds life without encroaching too much on your feeling of space.

If you like to dress in the bathroom or simply have a spot to sit while shaving your legs, check out some of the spacesaver styles of seating. You can find very attractive folding chairs just for this purpose. When not in use, it slips easily out of sight - and space - until it's needed.

Good wall decorations afford more color opportunities that don't intrude on your space. A colorful wall hanging or plexiglass framed poster add pizazz to a small bathroom.

Successfully decorating a small bathroom can be a challenge, but it is certainly not impossible.
