Endangered Species

image

I remember sixth grade when we first started talking about endangered species. Back then, it was just starting to be fashionable to do in schools. Nonetheless, few adults learned about it. I was shocked. I had never heard about endangered or threatened animals before from my parents. Of course, they cheated a little bit in school. They only showed us the endangered species that were cute. We talked about pandas, cheetahs, pygmy chimpanzees, and animals like that. They didn't show us the big picture, but they did start us on what would be a lifelong awareness of the dangers of messing too much with the environment.

Of course, I can't really say that I remembered endangered species all the way through. Up until the time I went to college, as a matter of fact, I was concerned with the things that most kids are concerned with. I worried about friends, clothing, playing music, and getting ahead in school. I was a pretty good kid, and I like to think that I was concerned about the world around me, but I just wasn't that socially or politically aware.

In college, however, I got really tuned in to the importance of climate change. I took a class in environmental science where endangered species were one of the primary focuses. I was shocked by what I found out. Endangered and threatened species are being constantly driven towards the fate of extinction. More plants and animals are being added to the list every day, and there may be many that we don't even know about.

When I found out all these horrible things about endangered species, I knew that it was time to take action. I have never been very political, but it just makes sense now. The earth is in such danger from the reckless things that we do to the environment that it is hard to stand by any longer and do nothing. I tried working for a nonprofit organization, but it didn't really work out. I liked what they were doing, but it just wasn't were my strengths lied. Nonetheless, nowadays I give money to several endangered wildlife organizations. I also volunteer my time to help protect endangered species. It might not be enough to make a huge difference, but at least it is something. It is nice to be doing my part to help the earth. I just hope it is not too little too late.
