Estate Rings

image

There’s just something to be said for buying jewelry that has quite a history to it. My weakness is anything that sparkles and looks unique on my fingers – estate rings in particular. I’ve purchased my share of estate rings over the years and I’m quite sure that each piece has its own story. If I don’t know the story that is connected to the rings, I make up my own story.

One of the estate rings that I’ve managed to purchased came from an elderly lady who had worn that engagement ring for eighty years. Her ‘true love’ had given it to her before he went away to war and they married upon his return. When I put the ring on my finger, it was as if I was carrying on their legacy. Perhaps that sounds a bit strange but that is the reason that a lot of people buy estate jewelry.

Of course, if you’re not into buying estate rings and jewelry for the mere sentimental history of it, you may be able to find some valuable items for a great price. Sure, the ring may appear to be tarnished or weathered, but the gems in the ring just may be more valuable than you’d think. You can always have a gem reset into something that is newer and more modern if the old setting is weathered. But, you can’t always get a gemstone quite like they used to be.

However, you can’t expect that all estate rings will be valuable and are a unique find. Sometimes, gems turn out to be fake and buyers feel scammed. You should always make arrangements for an appraisal, either prior to or during the purchase. You can’t simply take the word of someone who is selling any estate rings. Perhaps the seller isn’t aware of the fact that the estate rings aren’t valuable. Maybe it was in the family for so long and everyone just assumes that it is real, but it turns out to be completely synthetic.

Buying estate jewelry can be, in a sense, like finding a buried treasure. You might end up finding something that has a great amount of monetary worth and years of history behind it. Or, you may end up finding a really old ring that isn’t worth more than one dollar. As long as you’re a bit educated and cautious, collecting estate rings may be one of the most rewarding and fun hobbies you’ll ever have.
