Exit Signs

If you run a large building, especially if you hold public events there, having adequate exits signs is necessary. It isn't just a matter of getting code compliant exit signs, either. If you invest a little bit of money into having clearly marked exits, you will save a lot of trouble down the road. It is amazing how many people can get lost during a long conference. Event organizers pay a lot of money to rent out my building space, but often complain about how difficult it is to navigate. I tried everything. I posted maps and directories, clearly marked the front doors, and even installed a help desk. Eventually, however, the only thing that really helped was to get in some new exit lights. People respond to things that glow, especially if they say exit!

Of course I already had my fire exit signs up, but I found out that you can do a lot more than the basics as far as marking exits goes. Marking emergency exits is well and good, but most people do not really think about marking normal exit doors. In reality, however, it can be really useful. Even a door that looks like an obvious exits to you will not necessarily look like something obvious to a newcomer to your building. You can put up an exit sign pretty cheaply, and have a guarantee that people will be able find a way out.

There are several different choices for exit signs. Most people choose the traditional electrically powered ones, and they are pretty reliable in most circumstances. The problem is that, in the cases where they are most needed – namely emergencies – they can fail. Even emergency power can be short-circuited by fire, leaving people trapped within the building without any way of knowing which way is out. Because flames can make it even harder to see exit signs than usual, you really don't want people to have to face that situation! There is an easy solution, however: tritium exit signs.

I've been using these for a few years, and I'm pretty happy with them. Although they cost a lot more than other styles of emergency exit signs, in the long run they are worth it. They are powered by a nuclear element that lasts from 10 to 20 years, so you don't really have to worry about replacing them anytime soon. I haven't done the calculations, but I bet the amount of money you save on electricity makes it worth the investment.

Summary

Exit signs are a necessity for public places and businesses. A great manufacturer of quality exit signs is Tritium. These signs use nuclear technology and can work properly for many years. The amount of money saved by electricity alone makes them well worth the initial cost.
