Famous French Food
The French have exported their cuisine all over the world and famous French food is available in intimate bistros and Michelin Guide restaurants. There have been many well-known French chefs and schools of cooking, such as haute cuisine and nouvelle cuisine. Some establishments favour complicated dishes with rich sauces and expensive ingredients whilst others prefer the best of simple peasant cooking.
There are many regional dishes that have gained status. What binds all this famous French food together is a love of fresh ingredients. France is fortunate in being able to supply excellent beef, pork and chicken, along with seafood, fruits and vegetables. Cheese is another success story and also, various kinds of mushrooms and truffles. All these delicious components are accompanied by the best wines, France has to offer.
There is nothing to beat a simple breakfast of croissants and jam or perhaps, some pain au chocolat. Anyone who has been on vacation to France will know the joy of walking into a patisserie and sampling the pastries on offer. Madeleine cakes melt in the mouth and profiteroles are delicious puff pastries, filled with cream. Famous French food is often bought daily in its home country, especially in rural areas. French shoppers like to buy bread and other items, fresh from the market.
One of the most popular dishes is Coq au Vin. It was immensely fashionable in the UK during the 1970s when entertaining friends at dinner parties. In fact, it was often the first dish that couples learned to prepare. The chicken cooked in wine is simple to cook and the classic recipe includes button mushrooms, carrots, onions, celery and garlic. Flavor is added with stock, seasoning and the blend of herbs, known as Bouquet Garni. Another fashionable meal was Boeuf Bourguignon. This is beef slowly cooked in red wine and also uses Bouquet Garni. Escargot, or snails, are perhaps an acquired taste but some people can't get enough of them. Their flavor is best appreciated when cooked in garlic butter.
Regional cooking favorites have spread throughout the world, including another hearty casserole called Cassoulet. This originates from the southwest of the country and is usually prepared with sausage, duck or goose or a combination of these. White haricot beans are added and the result is a thick, tasty stew. One of the most famous French foods to appear in the world's restaurants is the crepe, the thin pancakes that originate from Brittany. Lighting the Crepes Suzettes, with its Grand Marnier liqueur and bringing the fiery dessert to the table is the highlight of many evenings out.
