Model Train Sets For Hobbyists
I've been looking for a fun and interesting hobby that will allow me to bond with my son. Right now we play lots of video games together, and occasionally toss a ball around, but I want to get him into something that doesn't involve sitting on the couch or braving the elements. Since he's always been fascinated by trains, I thought it would be cool to check out model train sets and construct our own railroad in the basement. So far, this idea has been working brilliantly!
I never had any model train sets when I was a kid, so I had to start from scratch. Before making any purchases, I read as much as I could on the subject to help ensure a more positive experience all around. The last thing I wanted to do was spend a ton of money on electric trains and layouts only to have my son say he wasn't interested after all! So, as most hobbyist websites recommend, I stuck with inexpensive model train sets at first. Once my son shows sustained interest after several months or more, I can move on to the better stuff.
I also learned that buying model train sets isn't as simple as picking out the coolest cars and slapping them down on the track. Instead, I had to consider things like gauge (track width) and scale (the size relationship between the toy car and the real one), and also had to give extensive thought to the layout. The layout in particular would take lots of time, because it's important to have a visually pleasing, realistic place for these model train sets to run. A classic oval shape layout would get boring pretty quickly, so I definitely wanted something a bit more intricate than that!
Building the layout turned out to be a lot of fun, and decorating it with tiny townspeople, buildings, and other landmarks was also a blast. My son participated fully in every step, which was a good sign. After that, we were ready to check out actual model train sets for the layout. I knew electric trains were popular, but I wasn't quite prepared for the vast selection of cars from all these different manufacturers! I thought Lionel model train sets were the only game in town -- how wrong I was! These days, hobbyists can also buy excellent starter packages from Chooch, Daylight, Blair Line, Microscale, Precision Craft, New Rail, and more.
My son and I have already spent countless hours together setting up our miniature railroad in the basement, and I'm sure we'll continue to have many more bonding sessions in the future. Model train sets are perfect for wannabe conductors of any age, so check them out today!

Summary
Model train sets for hobbyists are so much fun! The very cool part is picking out the next car to add to the collection. It is amazing how quickly a simple run of track can transform into an entire town with people, trees, bridges, pets, and have a level of realism that is so profound you have to look twice.
