The Purpose Of The Parent Teacher Organization

image

Budget cuts across the country have eliminated many programs and projects for local schools. Parent teacher associations or parent teacher organizations help with funding projects that may be eliminated. The role of parent teacher organizations is to fill a void in this area and also provide community support for other activites. Having a child now myself, I've come to realize the importance of becoming involved in my child's education and the need to become involved more with the school system.

This year, the parent teacher association bought lovely folders for all of the children. My daughter’s school sends a folder home each day with each child. The work comes home in it, and whatever needs to be sent back also goes into the folder to go back the next day. These folders are actually a very good idea, and would work well in any school. The parent teacher organization paid to have these printed for each child with the school mascot on the cover. I thought that was a very nice touch. Parents could have spent money on a folder for their own child, but it might not have been as special as these folders seem to be.

The parent teacher organization in my daughter’s school also makes arrangements and takes care of the students on picture day. That means that the work of organization this is taken off of the shoulders of the administration and teachers. They keep things running smoothly, and they ask for parent volunteers to help out. This school does pictures twice a year, so the parent teacher organization keeps things running smoothly without the school having to stop everything to get it done. They organize many other like activities as well.

Parent teacher organizations do much more than that. Tasks from raising money for projects to helping with new landscaping, uniform costs, or supporting groups in sports are all handled with the organization. Every school is different and has it's own set of needs. The PTO can step in and help by donation, fundraisers, or any other way to make money to improve the schools for the children. Simple things like donating or or buying items as fundraisers all help support the school and benefit your child.

Summary

Parent Teacher Organizations are the backbone of school activites. Without the cooperation and efforts of this group, many schools would not have as many fiund raising activites in order to better their school. Parents can help out in more ways than just bake sales. New landscaping projects or donations all help bring the community together and benefit all children who attend the school.
