Pictures Of Space

image

Those of us that are baby boomers have seen many achievements in our life time. Some of the technology has been wonderful and others we could have done without, however the world is much smaller in many ways because of the technology that we have today. It is hard to single out one thing that has had the biggest impact on our world. But I still marvel at the early space program and the achievements that were made at the early age of technology.

I was still in elementary school when we landed on the moon for the first time. I remember sitting in front of the black and white television in my parent’s living room and seeing the first pictures of space. At the time I thought they were really neat; however I did not come to appreciate this achievement until many years later. I think it was the Ron Howard movie, Apollo 13 that helped me realize just how large an accomplishment those pictures of space were.

When my husband and I went to see the movie we ran into my nephew and his wife going into the theater. We visited as we waited to get into the theater and then sat next to each other. We all enjoyed the movie and as we were leaving I mentioned to my husband that I could not recall when the crisis that happened around Apollo 13 occurred. My nephew was shocked to find out that the movie he had just seen was based on reality. NASA and space missions have been around his entire life. Pictures of space are something that he had hanging in his room as a young boy. The pictures of space were so common place to him that they did not hold the awe and wonder that they did for those of us that are older.

A few weeks after we had been at the movie I saw my nephew again at a family function. He told me that the movie had a lasting effect of him and that he was starting to collect pictures of space to have in his office. He was now looking at the pictures with a clearer vision of the great accomplishments and sacrifice that went into getting them. On our way home I told my husband that I suppose our blasé use of electricity and telephones are the same as my nephew’s reactions to pictures of space. When you have always been surrounded by something it is not as meaningful.

Summary

Pictures of space were not as common long ago as they are now. Back then, these glimpses outside of our universe were awe-inspiring. It provoked thought as to what could be out there. How big is it? Pictures are online now. You can visit the outer edges of the universe any time you wish. Pretty cool, huh?
