Tips For Raising Young Gifted Children
You do not know what is going to happen when you get pregnant and have a child. God willing, your child will be healthy and happy. Some, however, are born with disabilities and conditions like Autism that will change your life, as well as theirs. You want to have a healthy baby no matter what, but will love your child even if you feel that your life is going to change too dramatically. On the other end of the spectrum, you could have a child free of any type of disability, and your biggest problem would be how to successfully raise young gifted children.
There are not going to be many parents that complain about having young gifted children. The only thing that may bother them is that they don’t feel as if they know how to challenge them. These children are often bored with some things that are fine for the rest of us, and they need extra stimulation. That may mean they get into trouble a bit more often if parents have no idea what to do with them. There are a great many resources for helping disabled children, but not so many about helping gifted children.
The guidelines for giftedness are not always the same. You can have an exceptionally bright child that is not gifted, but would need to be handled in the same way. They can and will learn more, and they will do it much more quickly. That can leave parents wondering what they can do. Having them in early learning programs is good, but when they get into kindergarten, they may be so far ahead that they have nothing to learn that year. Some schools have good screening for young gifted children and decide accordingly, but some do not.
Parents with young gifted children can go out and find some new learning tools that they can use with their children. They should not, however, get carried away. Any child needs a good mix of play and learning to be balanced. If they do nothing but learning, they won’t learn how to relax and have fun, and that can lead to high strung children that are always on the move. They need to know how to use downtime to recharge. Young gifted children need to have time to regroup just like you do.
No matter how challenging it can be to raise young gifted children, remember that you should never overwhelm yourself, and you should try to see that they feel like everyone else. That means they should not always be told how smart they are or be made to feel as if they are superior to all other children their age. This is not going to help them go through life. Their social skills are going to depend on how you treat them and what you make of the fact that they are gifted. Smart is great, but being without friends is devastating to any child as they go through school.

Summary
Raising young gifted children offers more challenges than a typical child. It can be difficult to restrain from praising too much. Gifted kids are just like everyone else. They need friends and good social skills to survive the school years. Smarts will only take you so far, and then there's life.
