Round Tables

If you listen to the way that some interior decorators, self-proclaimed Feng Shui masters, and other kooks talk about it, you would think that nothing says more about you than the way you arrange your furniture. To hear them speak, having one chair out of place could cause chronic disease, disorganization, infidelity, and any other problem an individual, household, or family could face. I grew up in a family with no sense of organization at all, and all of us turned out just fine. If the layout of your house affects the way you think, it is certainly neither an insurmountable obstacle to happiness nor a guarantee of success.

Nonetheless, I can't deny that, since I started rearranging furniture, I have had a clearer head and a more productive life. In particular, my round table has done wonders for the layout of my living room. I haven't really ever thought of having a round wood table before. You see, like most people, I think in squares. Rooms are rectangular, so it is only natural that tables and chairs should be roughly rectangular as well. Round tables seemed like an inefficient use of space, occupying a bigger portion of the room then their footprints really took up.

As a matter of fact, until I went over to a new friend's house for dinner, I had no idea how a round table could open up a room. It really did wonders. Rather than making it more crowded, the round table made it feel like we were more connected when we sat down for dinner. We didn't have sharp corners between us, or rigid geometrical boundaries separating one side of the table from another. Although the round table legs did create natural divisions in the seating area, they were nowhere near as crude and overt as with your traditional rectangular table. I was hooked.

What I didn't realize is how hard it can be to pick out a round table. I have never been able to pick out furniture, but this was particularly baffling. Did I want one that was circular, or one that was more oval-shaped. I could see advantages to both designs, particularly since the oval-shaped one seemed to use space more efficiently. In the end, however, I took a circular one. That was, after all, the shape of the round table at my friends house, and I loved that table.

Summary

Round tables can be a decorating delight. They tend to make meal times more intimate just by their very nature. Rectangular tables tend to keep people more separate from each other. They may appear to take up more space, but they are very inviting for friends and family.
