Save The Earth

image

It is amazing how much things have changed. It used to be that everyone wanted to save the world from communism. I still sometimes watch old cold war era movies where the hero has to do everything in his power to save the Earth from a diabolical Russian scheme. Movies like Red Dawn played on our primal fears of worldwide nuclear holocaust.

One would expect that, with the Cold War over, that type of doomsday mentality would fade out. Surprisingly, it has not done so at all. People still feel that our very existence is in trouble, and the threat seems every bit as imminent. If anything, the cries for saving the Earth have become even more urgent. You see, mutually assured destruction was by no means inevitable, but global warming is. “Save the Earth from the greenhouse effect” is on everyone's lips, from elementary school students to legislators. Even Republicans are using the save the Earth language, so you know we're in trouble.

Unfortunately, although everyone wants to save the earth, few people really have a clear idea of how best to go about doing it. There are, of course, many moderate changes that you can make to help prevent further environmental destruction. Some people think that you can save the Earth by planting more trees. In a certain way, this is true. Plants reduce carbon dioxide levels, taking it in and producing oxygen which reduces the greenhouse effect. Still, a few trees, or even a few thousand trees, won't make that much difference. If we want to save the Earth, we have to move beyond investing in renewable resources, planting trees, and cleaning up trash on Earth day. We need to take more drastic measures.

Some people are so grim about it that they think the only way to save the planet is to kill off a large number of people. In some ways, this frightening philosophy is eerily rational. People create most of the global pollution, ergo the way to handle global pollution is to kill people. In my opinion, however, this save the Earth approach is worse than the disease. After all, saving the earth isn't really about the Earth at all – it is about the people. We need to save ourselves from our own destructive environmental practices. The extinction of animals is frightening, but the eventual extinction of our friends and family is a hundred times worse. This is what we should think about when we think of talk about saving your.

Summary

Save the earth should be the cry of the worlds population. It is up to everyone as individuals to do their part to protect our home. Moderate changes like planting more trees will not make much of an impact at this point. More drastic measures need to be taken. Some people believe killing a large number of people is the only way. This is not supported by the majority of people. It is going to take the power of all the worlds people working together to make our environmental practices and wasteful habits a thing of the past. Sacrifices must be made for our future.
