Are School Uniforms A Good Idea? When I was in high school, the idea of our school going to uniforms was thrown around. When I heard this, I was horrified that I might have to wear school uniforms instead of the clothing that I had in my closet. I didn’t understand it then, but I think I understand the reasoning behind it now. Some fear that uniforms will stifle individuality. This is a worry, but there are far more good reasons than bad to have such a policy in any school. I guess it depends which side of the fence you are on. There are many things about school that many of us forget as we get older. Though it is something that girls worry about more than boys, it is an issue for both genders. Clothing is one of the biggest ways teens identify with who they are. Some children come from wealthy homes, and they can have the latest styles and expensive wardrobes. Other children have no choice to but to shop where the clothing is very cheap. This is a huge weapon some teens use against each other, and is a major form of passive aggressive bullying. School uniforms eliminate this all the way around. It won’t help after school, but it won’t be a distraction while classes are in session. School uniforms have long been something that those in private schools wear, but more and more public school systems are using them for a variety of reasons. Some parents react badly, but end up realizing that this is something that can be a very good thing. In schools that tend to have a high rate of crime, uniforms for school tend to eliminate students from wearing gang related items that might cause trouble or friction. What can be hard about school uniforms is the price. Those that don’t have a lot balk at the idea of having to buy them. However, many schools have programs that help those who can’t really afford them and no one has to know. If your school is considering school uniforms, find out what would happen if you couldn’t afford them. No child should have to worry about clothing, and the uniforms can eliminate that. I can’t imagine any school would punish a child that could not afford the uniforms for school, but rather, would see to it that they get some help with purchasing them. Don’t let the cost overshadow the benefits. Summary School uniforms are regarded as good by some, and horrible by others. Parents in general tend to not like the idea of uniforms as cost for clothes may be higher than regular clothes. Kids that are fashion conscious really don't like the idea.
