Teaching Your Kids About School Violence
It’s a sad reality that we have to worry about school violence in our school systems today, but that does not mean that you should ignore it. You should not freak out about it either, but rather, find ways to teach your children about these things without scaring the wits out of them. Most children, in reality, will never have to worry about this, but it does not hurt to at least touch on the subject with your kids, especially since they will be talking about it to some extent at school.
You may be aware that most schools are now holding drills for children so they know what to do when it comes to school violence. My daughter is in kindergarten and they have had two drills jus this year. The children are assigned a spot for such a drill and they are told to remain quiet and out of sight. Teachers hold the responsibility of locking the doors and keeping the kids quiet, but it is something that children learn young in our modern world. They don’t necessarily say that these drills are about school violence, at least not to the kids, but we all know that is what is going on.
When children have school violence drills, the school system should let you know when they are happening and what they will be doing. It would be in your best interest to find out more, and then talk with your children the night before or right after the event. Explain that things happen, and it might not be something that they ever have to worry about, but it is good that they learn what to do if something goes wrong in school. Answer questions as best as you can, but keep it light if at all possible. You don’t want them to be up all night worrying about things happening.
If you aren’t sure what to say, and how to handle questions about school violence, don’t feel bad. This is very new to parents and is not something that we ever dreamed would be an issue. You can always ask other parents for advice, or you can see if you can find some books on the subject. They write books on just about everything else you can think of, so I would imagine you can find books on this subject as well. If not, look for something general about talking with your kids about touchy subjects, and tailor that to your talk about violence in schools.

Summary
Teaching kids about school violence is something commonplace nowadays. Many schools have drills to rpepare in the event of such a happening although they may not inform the younger children why. Being prepared is the key, and protecting the lives of students needs to be a top priority.
