Trailer Rental

image

Usually, I'm a pretty laid back person. As long as I have my feet on the ground, I am as relaxed as can be. When I am a little bit ungrounded, however, things change dramatically. Recently, I moved across the country, and it was one of the most stressful situations I ever faced. Don't get me wrong – I didn't really have anything to be worried about. After all, I had saved up quite a bit of money for the move, and I had a good job lined up as soon as I got there. Nonetheless, I was worried about everything. I was worried about money, worried about the road trip, and worried about finding things wrong with the house. I decided to save some money by moving my possessions by myself. I was afraid that, if I hired movers, something would get broken. I have heard too many horror stories about bad movers.

Originally, I was going to rent a U Haul moving truck, however it didn't really make sense to do that. You see, I was driving across the country with my girlfriend. Having to drive the U-Haul and our own car would have made things a lot more difficult. Instead, we got a trailer rental. The local U-Haul had many different rental trailers, varying in size from models just barely bigger than a large trunk, to huge ones that looked impossible to tow. We decided to hire a midsized trailer rental, just barely big enough for most of our important possessions. We would get the rest of them when we visited my parents the next summer.

It turns out that hiring a trailer rental was one of the worst decisions I made. If you have never driven across the country with a rental trailer attached the back of your car, you don't know how difficult it is. It looks easy when you see people towing trailer rentals on the highway, but trust me – it isn't. The thing sways back and forth frighteningly, threatening to swerve out of the lane at any given moment. Once you get up in the mountains, it is practically a nightmare. Driving uphill, it feels like you will not have enough power to make it. Driving downhill, you half expect the thing to push you off the road! I had thought that the trailer rental move would decrease my anxiety, but instead it made me a nervous wreck. Next time, I'll be smart enough to simply hire movers.

Summary

If you are moving, renting a trlailer may seem like a viable solution to move certain things from your old home to your new one. If you have never driven a vehicle with a rental trailer attached before, invest in some time practicing before you actually have to do it. Trailers add a lot of weight and the vehicle will perform differently due to this. Most people hire movers instead of attempting this themselves.
